About KANSEL
The Kansas School for Effective Learning is a private non-profit member organization of the United Way of the Plains. KANSEL was established in 1989 through a cooperative effort of the Machinist Locals 639 and 834, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 271, IAM Cares, Wichita/Hutchinson Labor Federation and Learjet to provide individualized tutoring for Wichita employees who needed to complete the GED or who had a high school diploma but needed to upgrade their basic reading, writing and math skills. KANSEL founders recognized a growing need for individualized tutoring services to enable Wichita employees to be better prepared to secure and maintain employment. KANSEL was awarded a Venture Grant from the United Way of the Plains in 1990 and became a member organization of the United Way of the Plains in 1993. KANSEL was initially sponsored by the IAM Cares project and began operations at the Machinists Union building located at 3830 S. Meridian. KANSEL experienced rapid growth during the first two years of operation that resulted in a move to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Building at 1046 S. Broadway. KANSEL moved to its current offices in March 1998. Plans to move to another location are currently underway. Currently, KANSEL classes include, but are not limited to: GED preparation, basic skills training, private tutoring, English as a Second Language (ESL), Spanish language instruction, computer training, and high school algebra. KANSEL classes are designed to provide individualized instruction. Classes are held at the 334 N. Topeka location, at community centers and at business locations. Funding for the 2007 program year includes United Way of the Plains, Sedgwick County Prevention Funding, Student Fees, Business Contracts and private donations.
